More AMD vs Intel benchmarks. Posted by
Time2Die@ 8:42 AM EDT
Check this article out. A P4 2gig vs AMD 1.4gig comparison. Basically the only area that the AMD fails in (other than SSE2 hehe) is memory bandwidth...too bad that is a choke point for maxing out your Quake3 experience.

Last night we played eradicate for OGL. After winning on W1 we lost on ctf2. The 3rd map was WhiteNoise. It was really close with several almost caps. In the end KI pulled out a 1-0 win, for a KI 2-1 win for the match. GG's !

Click on the below link to have your workstation security evaluated: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/mpsa/start.asp
Also, another good link is this one: Shields UP! Which is an online port scanner that will alert and advise you on whether you machine/firewall/whatever is open to hacker attacks.

Signs that your site is hardcore...you have a Max Payne "Cheats" link. Been noticing as I surf the world wild webs that a lot of smaller sites have some "Max Payne" action hehe...unfortunately our site is not "HARDCORE".
Here's an Win2k version of MSconfig (with Max Payne links!) http://www.insideproject.com/guides/showguide.cfm?guideid=31

nVidia drivers. Posted by
Time2Die@ 11:04 AM EDT
I saw on ShugaShack some "8.05" detonator drivers. About 3-6 months ago there was a kit released that would basically allow you to modify the refereance drivers to report back any version number you wanted. This made "leaked" drivers very hard to validate whether they were real or not. The Detonator 4 drivers are expected out later this week and will have a version number around 20.80 or higher. I wouldn't install anything that didn't come from nVidia or a reputable source like 3dchipset.com .
Cyberathlete Ametuer League - Long Ass Post Posted by
StingRay@ 4:15 AM EDT
CAL is just another league. They made a decision on what clans to let in, 18 of them, and some people protested because they didn't make it. I'd probably be mad if we didn't make it either, I guess thats just something we take for granted. Seeing as how this isn't really a professional event (it is an ametuer league right?) why should it even matter if they wanted in. They didn't ban Tiger Woods because he was black...
Who cares anyways? We aren't going to win CAL, neither are any of the clans who were added to the roster. We merely pride ourselves on being able to compete on their level. We don't want a channel full of idlers who want to basque in egos. We want it full of friends. We only joined CAL so we could play with some fairly respectable clans.
Ok so now I'll point out the fact that the clan which complained to CAL was clan Warp. Fairly new, contains a few members from the former clan Loose Cannons (another fairly new clan). We somehow ended up scrimmaging these guys last Sunday. They played, complained, and left basically. Second game about six minutes into their map all but one of them leaves in discust (they were losing). The last one left on the server (I'm assuming it was the leader) apologizes for his teammates and leaves. Game over. Last night, Monday, a two warp members (one of which was c0re) come in asking for a small scrim, both under alias (assumingly to protect their egos). Really mature huh? They play Jon and Nate a few times. I completely dog them out on IRC in our channel later on because of the fact that they couldn't get a single frag in. At first I was just joking with them. They got serious, so I acted like a complete asshole. Nothing will change that. It wasn't until later that I found out that it was, in fact, two members of clan Warp. That basically justified it for me.
Ok so back to the present. Warp complains to CAL because they weren't accepted. Why weren't they accepted? I guess it wouldn't have been an issue of they weren't such asses on the previous few nights.
Special note: Jargirl is a CAL admin... I guess she wasn't shined very well by Warp either. Possibly the fact that Warp is (dare I say it) yet another 'attitude' clan could be why they weren't initially accepted. Was Thorain's decision to add six more teams to CAL a good one? In my eyes, any decision that adds more pain than pleasure to anything is a bad one. Ok, we get to play more games, spectacular. Now we get to play more games with more assholes.
This is all my opinion. I just want to play. I don't want bullshit when I play video games.

New AMD rig. Posted by
Time2Die@ 2:21 PM EDT
I have been a die hard Intel fan for a long time. I grew up (so to speak) in the 486 days where unless you had a true blue Intel chip you could expect compatibility problems. The decision to go with a non-Intel solution for my workstation upgrade was a labored one involving countless hours of reading reviews from sites like Toms Hardware, Anandtech and HardOCP among a few others. The deciding factors were stability and compatibility, money (duh) and a stern fear of getting stuck with Rambus RAM that couldn't be re-used in the future.
From what I have read, the AMD 1.4gig CPU's have been rock stable on the AMD chipset motherboards. The 1.4's are about half of what the Intel's sell for and have been benchmarked at performing close to the 1.7gig Intel. And the Rambus RAM is running at about twice the money as DDR or standard SDRAM. Plus there are rumors that Intel is going to dump Rambus all together at the beginning of the year so there are concerns about getting stuck with proprietary RAM. Intel does have a P4 board coming out this month that does SDRAM but the performance takes a huge hit and the Intel board that does DDR isn't coming out till the beginning of next year. So for price and performance, the AMD has won my wallet over. Time and a clean install will tell if it will also win my respect.
The system that I'm putting together for smeg and myself is an AMD 1.4gig/266 CPU in a FIC AD11 motherboard using the AMD 761 (760) chipset with 512meg of Kingston 2100 DDR RAM. With shipping and purchasing a boxed AMD chip (cost about $40 more but comes with a fan/heat sink), the cpu/mb/ram comes up just under $400. You can save about $40-60 by going with generic RAM and an OEM CPU. The reason for the boxed CPU is most OEM CPU's are only warrantied for 30-days. This varies a bit between OEM to OEM but the extra for the boxed CPU is made up with a 3 year warranty from AMD.
I will be doing some before and after benchmarks of the upgrade and publish the results to give those thinking of upgrading an idea of what kind of performance boast you could expect to see.

Here are some interesting benchmarks of a 1.8gig Intel rig and a 1.4gig AMD rig running on Windows98 and Windows2000 doing Q3a bench marks. I really wish these websites wouldn't use the lastest greatest video boards that no one uses let alone can afford.

Downtime. The webserver that the KI page is on was up...the DNS for the domain which is located on a different box was down for about 28hours.
OK OK. So I have been putting off fixing the secondary DNS ip that's registered with InterNIC. Why do I always remember when the connection that the primary is on goes down...DOH!

Good God. We just played a 56 minute scrim with Affliction on Q3WCTF1. Scores were tied at zero for 56 whole minutes with about 5 close calls which resulted in DENIAL. I think we can all be declared legally insane now.

Ducks go quack quack. Posted by
StingRay@ 10:59 PM EDT
Hello my future girlfriend. This is what I sound like. I am eleven years old in the 6th grade in New Mexico. PLEASE PM ME. Ok so no one gets the joke but me beacuse I'm the only one with the hello kid song mp3 remix.
So anyways... To the point... We won our Online Gaming League match against clan Nomads on the maps Q3WCTF1 (4-0) and Q3CTF3 (4-0). The victory itself is not the exciting part, merely the fact that we actually got to play a match. We've had 3 forfiet wins in STA in the past three weeks, so it is just exciting to actually get to play the video games officially with other Quake Three: Capture The Flag video gamers.
My headphones broke today but it's not like I ever really use them anyways. Just thought I'd let you know. Had a lot of fun driving to the store to get new ones. When I got to the overpass of I24 on Highway 96 about 50 bikers got off the interstate. It looked really cool. I got really hyper and honkied my horn and waved at those guys. There was this one fat guy who's shirt was flying up to his neck and I could see his back. Atleast I think it was his back, it was pretty white. So anyways, I got Sony MDR-CD280s and they only cost $32 because thats all I wanted to spend. They sound a lot better than my old ones because they were Sony MDR-CD60s. I think the jump in 220 model number was worth the price.
(KI|StingRay) !fcount ([Time-b0t]) 11329 fucking times! 1337 personal times
I hit 1337 on the fcounter in #killco just thought I'd talk about that a little bit since it's pretty 1337. It took a lot of hard work, 1337ness, dedication, and of course a lot of fucks. But in the end it all pays off. *shedding a tear*
If you gained anything from this news post then I am glad for you to be doing so. If not, atleast I got to waste your time and you read the whole thing. That about wraps it up. Goodbye! Thanks for stopping by!

Welcome suicidal and Welcome Back elite! Posted by
jargirl@ 11:34 PM EDT
KI has 2 new members to welcome to the ranks. Suicidal has been a tryout for quite some time now and has proven his rail skillz to be very worthy. He'll soon be there to greet you in the middle on W1 with his rail. Elite was in KI not too long ago and took a break from the Q3 scene to....well...he took a break. But, he's back now and back on the (right) team. I'm sure he'll be in his usual position on O very soon.

Q3 Benchmarks. Posted by

I've always wanted to find one of these comparisons...a Win2k vs Win9x Q3 timedemo comparison on highend hardware.
Here's the Win2k Scores and here's the Win9x scores. Win2k seems to edge out the Win9x scores anywhere from 5-15fps. Very interesting Dr. Jones.
Win2k Logo screens. Posted by

As I am now a geek for hire with my current company, I'm back in the business of following geek related news a little more closely. Here's a cool link to change your Win2k boot screen...which is cool but a little worthless if you never reboot your PC. I reboot mine depending on how much I use Adobe Photoshop, which has a cute (read: Annoying) memory leak. Even the 6.01 patch does me no good.
